Alnwick Wedding & Low Newton Beach, Northumberland

Steph and Elliot hold the North East Coast close to their hearts as a favourite holiday destination of theirs. As they are not from the area they travelled up to the North East over the last bank holiday to marry in Northumberland by the coast with a small wedding party of 8 adults and 5 kids.

They contacted me having seen a relaxed beach wedding on my website shot in Alnwick Registry Office and then on to Low Newton. They wanted to emulate this wedding from the series of wedding photos I took for Haley and Tony. As this was a small event and a low key day with a smaller budget and less fuss, they opted to hire me by the hour for simple documentary wedding photography of their day.

The weather couldn’t have been more different than Haley & Tony’s blazing sun as the rain didn’t stop but neither did the days plans! So we went on to the beach and got some beautiful stormy shots in their gorgeous vintage wedding outfits and bouquet. The challenge of wedding photography in heavy rain and wind out on the beach was a lot of  fun and added a unique story to the images. Once Steph and Elliot could bear no more cold coastal wind they went back to The Ship Inn for a cosy wedding breakfast with locally sourced fish and the Ship’s micro brewery real ale. Now that’s my kind of day!

If you have a small wedding planned why not get in touch? I can offer wedding photography at a low cost with no frills to fit limited budgets by charging by the hour. I also have a new range of wedding albums and packages coming out this month to fit all budgets so keep your eyes peeled for more news.

Alnwick Treehouse Intimate Wedding in Northumberland

This lovely couple got in touch as they were planning an intimate and small wedding in a months time in Alnwick Treehouse in Northumberland. They wanted a relaxed documentary approach to their wedding photography and my style fitted perfectly. With only two friends for wedding guests this was the smallest wedding I have ever photographed and certainly one of the most relaxed and fun! The Treehouse is a fantastic backdrop and a romantic venue for smaller weddings catering for simplicity, small parties and intimate groups wanting a fantastic dining experience.

The photography was creative and atmospheric as it captured the setting with home made table settings, the treehouse twinkly fairy lights, it’s famous wobbly rope bridge together with an open fire and table and chairs carved from wood. There was lots of laughter during the 3 hour shoot as the bride and groom were a hoot! I gave the newly wed couple and guests some space to capture creative reportage photography and a handful of posed just for the record.

If you are planning a wedding, this is your second marriage or you are just keen to make it a smaller event I offer wedding photography ‘by the hour’ as an alternative to investing in a large wedding package. This often suits those who want to get married quickly in the next few weeks or months rather than a year in the making. I will be there for the hours that you choose and then provide a CD approximately a week later for you to own the images on disc. I also provide albums and prints at a later date if you want additional services and these are at very affordable prices.

Natalie & Chris Wedding Recce at Newton

Natalie, Chris & I met last Sunday in the sub zero wind on the North East coast to chat through their wedding plans. The wedding is to be at Newton Hall and close by are the beautiful High & Low Newton beaches. We plan to shoot on the beach on the day of their wedding in mid February so we wanted to see what the light was like in the late afternoon and think through the practicalities of the cold & the tide.

The low tide and colourful winter sky added drama to the compositions as the couple practised being in front of my camera in the cold. Neither Chris nor Natalie like having their photograph taken so it was a good exercise to see how the shots would look, how comfortable they were being affectionate in front of the camera and it was an opportunity to see how I worked, all good preparation for the day.

If you are thinking of hiring a wedding photographer, see if they include a wedding ‘pre-shoot’ as its a great way to dispel any nerves you may have, to get to know each other better and its also an opportunity for the photographer to recce the venue. All my packages include a pre-shoot with retouched images supplied so please get in touch if you are planning your day.

Lucy & Kunal’s Durham Wedding

Lucy and Kunal were married last year in Durham registry office with a reception at gorgeous venue Bistro 21. The wedding was an intimate low key prelude to a huge traditional celebration the following hosted by Kunal’s family. Lucy was pregnant and only just fitted her vintage dress which fell perfectly, creating a flattering shape over her bump.

There was to be little or no formality to this wedding with a few group shots captured outside the venues on the grass, but the main objective was to create an informal story of the afternoon. This is my speciality within vintage wedding reportage photography, carefully narrating the day by creatively capturing the expressions, atmosphere and emotion of the day without too much order or formality.

The lighting and back grounds of both venues coincidentally matched with the yellow walls, bare stone lit by the soft light of late summer. The colours of these settings really enhanced this set of images with Durham registry office’s fuchsia pink chairs & green/cream interior and the warm natural tones for the private dining room upstairs at Bistro 21, Durham’s sister to Newcastle’s Cafe 21.

If you are planning a wedding, do think about how the venue will visually influence the photography and once all the excitement is over, the photos become the most important part of the memories. The more visually impressive they are the happier you will be.

Treehouse Wedding at Alnwick Gardens

Well this was an exciting winter challenge! I was called last minute to photograph an intimate tree top wedding in the middle of a very snowy January for a couple who had recently had an initial ceremony in India.

I drove to Alnwick Gardens through the blizzards last week to capture a single magical hour at a wedding reception that was being held in the beautiful Treehouse at Alnwick Gardens. The wooden interior was ideal for a winter event with a large scale open log fire creating warm, cosy and exciting photography.

Below is a moodboard of sample imagery from the night compiled specifically for the treehouse management’s wedding promotional material.
